ABU DHABI, 30th April, 2017 (WAM) -- A UAE Federal National Council, FNC, Parliamentary Division participated in the activities of the Standing Committee on Economic and Sustainable Development of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, held in the Kingdom of Bahrain on 25th and 26th April, along with over 96 parliamentarians from 21 Asian countries.
The parliamentary delegation included Dr. Saeed Abdullah Al Mutawa and Azza Suleiman bin Suleiman, Members of the FNC.
Dr. Al Mutawa said the meetings addressed topics related to development, energy and the environment, which are critical issues that affect the development being witnessed by Asian countries. These meetings aim to put in place the goals of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly and discuss the establishment of an Asian Parliament, he added.
Dr. Al Mutawa stated that the UAE would chair the Administrative and Financial Committee of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, with Abu Dhabi hosting its first meeting next month, confirming the UAE’s prominent international position in Asia.
Azza Suleiman said that the meetings’ agenda included a range of draft resolutions related to environmental issues, obstacles facing economic growth in Asia, the role of parliaments in eradicating poverty, the water sector in Asia and the role of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly in supporting the implementation of sustainable development goals.
The West Asia Group, which includes the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan and Palestine, held its second meeting under the chairmanship of Dr. Al Mutawa to discuss the establishment of the Asian Parliament. The UAE Parliamentary Division also presented a proposition on the principles of establishing the Asian Parliament.
The West Asia Group report was presented to the General Secretariat of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.
