JAKARTA, 10th May, 2017 (WAM) -- The UAE has participated in the second IORA Blue Economy Ministerial Conference in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
The UAE delegation was chaired by Mohammed Abdulla Mohammed bin Mutleq AlGhafli, UAE Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia, who was accompanied by IORA members, Mohamed Abbas Al Khouri, First Secretary of the UAE Embassy in Jakarta, and Nawaf Nassir Abdulla, Deputy-General Director and Chief Operating Officer at DP World Asia Pacific Region In his speech during the conference proceedings, AlGhafli said that the UAE prioritises the conservation of maritime resources and their sustainability, adding, "these are the main components to achieve sustainable development, eradicate poverty, protect biodiversity and support the economy through various activities such as fisheries and coastal tourism."
Mr. AlGhafli stressed the importance of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14 concerning maritime protection, and how the IORA conference can assist in implementing this goal, especially as it precedes the UN's Ocean Conference to be held next month in New York.
IORA member countries adopted the Jakarta Declaration on the Blue Economy at the conclusion of the conference. The Declaration identifies the need to guarantee the protection of the maritime and coastal environment within several focus areas including, aquaculture and fisheries, marine tourism, renewable ocean energy, the private sector, infrastructure and deep sea mining.
The first day of the conference saw a series of working sessions held by IORA experts to address the several focus areas. Mr. Abdullah presented in the third session titled, 'Developing Port Network in the IOR region', where he spoke on DP World's strategy and activities in IORA countries.
The UAE will be IORA vice president from 2017 to 2019, and president of the Association from 2019 to 2021.
