Higher Supervisory Committees for Year of Reading endorses basic principles for strategic plan

DUBAI, 4th February, 2016 (WAM) – In line with the declaration of 2016 as a Year of Reading by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Higher Supervisory Committee for the Year of Reading, approved during its first meeting today, the main principles of the strategic plan within the general framework of future reading empowerment.

The move also follows the directives of Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in this respect.

Chaired by Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the Higher Supervisory Committee for the Year of Reading, the committee discussed the resolutions of the retreat attended by over 100 intellectuals who brainstormed over a number of ideas. They discussed over 4,000 ideas, of which 180 were main ones.

The committee stressed the importance of achieving the main objective of the Year of Reading, with the emphasis to make it a permanent societal habit in the UAE and for future generations. The participants noted that the Year of Reading represents an opportunity for change in the UAE community to bring up a reader generation.

The main strategy focusses on Emirati families, students, educational system, employees and institutions. It also encourages change of societal conduct to spread culture of reading in all institutions. The reading strategy will be launched in March, along with a number of initiatives at local and federal levels.

The participants in the first meeting passed a number of resolutions, among others, setting up of a national media committee which will be tasked with preparation, supervision and boosting the role of media to highlight the Year of Reading. They also called for setting up local committees to supervise local and government initiatives and follow up sessions related with the Year of Reading, as well as set up a website to oversee the sessions and launch a month topic throughout the year.

The Higher Supervisory Committees for the Year of Reading was set up to co-ordinate all the efforts and launch initiatives in order to establish the UAE as a capital for content and knowledge in the region, and to implement the directives of the UAE President to bring up a reader generation capable to lead the knowledge-based development.

The meeting was attended by Hussein bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Health, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State and Chairman of the Board of National Media Council, Abdullah Abdul Rahman Al Shaibani, Secretary-General of the Dubai Executive Council, Saeed Saif Al Matrooshi, Secretary-General of the Ajman Executive Council, Mohammed Saeed Al Dhanhani, Director of Emiri Court in Fujairah, Humaid Al Shamsi, Secretary-General of Umm al-Qaiwain Executive Council, Afra Al Saberi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, and Saeed Al Eter, Executive Director of the Prime Minister's Office.
