ABU DHABI, 18th April, 2017 (WAM) -- With the blessing of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, witnessed the celebration of the UAE’s sporting family to honour national athletic achievements in 2016.
This included the honouring of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, as Sports Personality of the Year 2016, and 26 sporting federations, 412 individuals and four former sporting federation presidents. This came during the 11th Annual Celebration, which was held today at the National Theatre in Abu Dhabi.
The celebration, held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was witnessed by H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation and Chairman of the National Olympic Committee; Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development and Chairman of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, and a number of sheikhs, ministers, officials and presidents of sporting federations.
H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi led the list of athletes with achievements in 2016, in appreciation for His Highness’s support for sports and athletes in the UAE and for His Highness’s representation of an exceptional and perfect model of supporting UAE sports and athletes, and for his various contributions and giving to provide support, in order to maintain the country’s name at the forefront of all Arab and international sporting events.
H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said that the 11th Annual Celebration was held to celebrate the nation’s children who are exceptional athletes, highlighting their prominent role in portraying the true extent of the nation’s advancement and its progress in all sectors.
During his speech, Sheikh Nahyan welcomed H.H. Sheikh Mansour, stressing the pride in today’s honouring of the successful athletes to carry the name of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and for the UAE to always lead at the forefront of all countries of the world. He also confirmed the position of sports as a unique humanitarian activity that focusses on human development, community progress and the rise of the nation, while spreading love and peace, and encouraging the principles of international co-operation and teamwork.
