Ministry of Defence organises 'Leaders’ Conference for the 21st Century Wars'

ABU DHABI, 16th October, 2017 (WAM) -- The Ministry of Defence’s annual conference, titled 'Leaders’ Conference for the 21st Century Wars', will begin on 22nd October, 2017, under the patronage of the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

In a related statement, Mattar Al Dhaheri, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, highlighted the importance of the conference for the ministry’s role in preparing future leaders who exercise foresight in addressing the complex and ever-changing security challenges faced by the United Arab Emirates. He emphasised the urgency of the conference, at a time when the world is witnessing radical changes in the character of current and future wars, while further highlighting the ministry’s mandate as a pro-active institution concerned with anticipating the country’s future security needs.

Al Dhaheri added that the Ministry is an effective part of the UAE’s national defence system and that the conference would provide a platform to promote strategic relationships between the ministry and other national institutions, as well as regional and international partners. The conference will lay the foundations for reaching a collective understanding of advanced security threats and their potential impact at national, regional and international levels.

Major General Falah Al Qahtani, Assistant Under-Secretary for Policy and Strategic Affairs at the Ministry of Defence, affirmed that the ministry seeks to raise leaders’ awareness, through its annual conference, of the character of war in the 21st century. He said that the character of current conflicts has changed from those of the 20th century, incorporating new methods such as mind manipulation, whereby people are dominated through destructive extremist ideas promoted through social media channels.

"Their duty is to understand the nature of these conflicts, prepare to face them, and address the challenges faced by the UAE and its regional partners," Al Qahtani continued.

The ministry held a press conference on Monday at the Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi to announce the agenda of the conference, which will conclude on 23rd October, 2017. It will be held at the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research and at Rabdan Academy, in Abu Dhabi.

The official spokesman for the conference, Dr. Ismail Al Bloushi, said that the event will address a range of important strategic issues encapsulated by a keynote speech titled 'The Changing Character of War in the 21st Century', followed by another speech on 'The Use of Media and Digital Diplomacy in Wars'. These will be followed by a series of panel discussion featuring Emirati and international experts.
