ABU DHABI, 6th May, 2018 (WAM) -- Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, today witnessed the graduation of over 600 students from Khalifa University.
The graduation ceremony was the first one held by the university since its establishment through the merger of the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and research, Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, and the Petroleum Institute, in February 2017.
Sheikh Hazza awarded PhD, master’s and bachelor’s certificates to the graduates while wishing them luck and success in their future lives, during a ceremony that was held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, ADNEC.
"We are proud of the youth who specialised in modern science, and their graduation during the anniversary of the birth of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has given them the extra responsibility to not accept anything but excellence and success," Sheikh Hazza said.
The graduation, which was held under the theme, "In Zayed’s Footsteps," and coincides with the Year of Zayed and the anniversary of the birth of the UAE’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed, is the university’s first graduation ceremony after the merger of the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and the Petroleum Institute, at the start of last year.
The students graduated a year after the university achieved the highest rating in engineering and technology among the country’s universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 200-250 academic categories, which included 500 universities from various countries around the world.
The university also placed 32nd out of 359 Asian universities in 2018 according to the same rankings, an increase of 44 places from its previous ranking while also placing 2nd in the Arab region.
The ceremony, which was attended by sheikhs, ministers, Abu Dhabi Executive Council members, ambassadors and senior officials, as well as the parents and friends of the graduates, saw the graduation of 32 PhD students, while 197 students received their master’s in Engineering and Science and 427 received their bachelor’s degrees in nine engineering specialisations offered by the university.
During his speech, Dr. Todd Larsen, President of Khalifa University, congratulated the graduates.
"Whether you choose, after graduating, to continue your academic journey, enter the workplace or teach, you must do so out of your faith in your abilities and with great passion. We believe that our graduates are totally ready to enter the next stage and face various challenges, due to their obvious commitment and seriousness in the specialisations that they chose," Dr. Larsen added while wishing the students success in their future professional lives.
Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice President of Khalifa University, said that the diverse group of graduates will help build a knowledge-based economy that is desired by the UAE’s wise leadership while stressing that the graduates are now ready to apply the knowledge that they learnt from leading professors and experts at the Khalifa University.
"We believe that the creativity and innovation of the graduates will benefit the community, especially in the areas of science and engineering, as well as in their ability to help strengthen the UAE’s leading role in international technology," he added.
The first post-merger graduation ceremony follows Khalifa University’s impressive global and regional ranking achievements. At present, Khalifa University is top-ranked in the UAE in the 2018 Times Higher Education (THE) subject rankings in ‘Engineering and Technology’ and is placed within the 201-250 band out of 500 engineering and technology educational institutions from around the world. The university is also ranked 32nd out of 359 Asian universities in the 2018 THE Asia University Rankings, and is in the second position out of 31 universities in the 2018 THE Arab World University Rankings.
The rankings were the outcome of Khalifa University’s achievements in intellectual property development. For the year 2017, the university registered about 23 patents, approximately 30.3% of the total registered for the UAE, thus becoming the highest contributor of registered patents from the UAE with the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2017.
