RABAT, 13th March, 2019 (WAM) -- Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the Federal National Council, FNC, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with Hakim Benchamach, Speaker of the Moroccan House of Councillors.
The MoU aims to strengthen the parliamentary cooperation between the UAE and Morocco, to achieve the visions of their leadership and the aspirations of their peoples, as well as to support their parliamentary institutions in realising their development goals and strategic visions.
During the discussion, which was at the headquarters of the House of Councillors, Dr. Al Qubaisi and Benchmach highlighted the importance of the MoU in promoting joint parliamentary cooperation, through exchanging relevant opinions and knowledge.
Both sides stressed that the UAE and Morocco, due to the wisdom of their leadership, headed by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and King Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, are achieving advancement and sustainable development.
They also stressed the importance of benefitting from the location of the UAE and Morocco as gateways to the African continent, the Middle East and the entire world, which will facilitate economic trade, investment cooperation and cultural communication, to achieve the aspirations of their peoples for greater stability and development.
At the start of their discussion, Benchmach welcomed Dr. Al Qubaisi and her delegation while affirming that the house considers the visit as key to strengthening the overall relations between their countries.
"We share the same aspirations and ambitions, and despite our geographic distance, we share the same regional challenges. We have signed many agreements that have enabled our countries to achieve economic, trade and investment cooperation, and the UAE is Morocco’s leading Arab investment partner."
He also highlighted the importance of the MoU, which will help both sides to enhance their overall cooperation, launch joint projects and exchange expertise.
Dr. Al Qubaisi thanked Benchmach for his hospitality and for inviting the FNC to visit Morocco. She also praised Morocco for organising and hosting the meetings of the "Conference of the Union of the Member States in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation," which aims to meet the aspirations of Arab and Islamic peoples.
Dr. Al Qubaisi delivered the greetings of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa, and the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to King Mohammed VI and Benchmach, as well as the greetings of the Emirati people to the Moroccan people.
She also affirmed the importance of mutual visits and meetings and exchanging expertise while inviting Benchmach to visit the UAE and the FNC.
She then stressed that the relations between the two countries are historic, in light of the fraternity between the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and King Hassan II, whose relations were a model of Arab solidarity while pointing out that Morocco was the first Arab country visited by Sheikh Zayed after the establishment of the Federation.
Dr. Al Qubaisi affirmed that the cooperation between the two sides is proven by the signing of over 60 MoUs and through the work of a joint committee. "We also value Morocco’s’ participation in the Expo 2020 Dubai, and the UAE is a partner in implementing the development plans of Rabat," she added.
She further added the UAE and Morocco are jointly combatting terrorism and extremism and have firm coordinated stances while affirming the importance of limiting terrorism’s destructive effects and creating peaceful solutions, as well as valuing Morocco’s support for a political solution in Libya, and pointing out Iran’s interference in internal Arab affairs.
Despite regional and global challenges, the UAE is always keen to strengthen security and stability, she further said while highlighting the importance of promoting tolerance and coexistence.
President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa declared 2019 as the Year of Tolerance, which began with the historic joint visit of Pope Francis, Head of the Catholic Church, and Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar, as well as the signing of the "Document on Human Fraternity" and the launch of the "Sheikh Zayed Award for Coexistence."
