UAE government launches ‘Government Design Initiative’ to deliver Centennial Plan 2071

DUBAI, 12th May, 2019 (WAM) -- The UAE government on Sunday launched the first of its kind "Government Design Initiative" to adopt design thinking, which focuses on fulfilling the aspirations and needs of the community, promoting a culture of design, developing and launching initiatives, policies and programmes that engage Emiratis in social and economic life in order to deliver the UAE Centennial Plan 2071.

Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future, said the UAE government, under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has established an exceptional government model that foresees the future and harnesses its tools to create a better tomorrow for all.

Al Gergawi added that the initiative is a clear implementation of Sheikh Mohammad’s directives for adopting a culture of design thinking in all fields of government work and working in partnership with the community to design innovative solutions for future challenges to improve life quality in the UAE community.

The initiative, he explained, will depend on researches and studies and Emirati and international experiences and experiments to take effective and influential decisions in alignment with the government future approaches.

The launch ceremony was attended by Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; Nasser bin Thani Al Hamli, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation; Hessa Essa Buhumaid, Minister of Community Development; Ohoud bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Happiness and Wellbeing and the Director General of the Prime Minister’s Office; along with a number of ministers and senior officials.

The Government Design Initiative aims to develop a new generation of government talents that adopt design as a work approach to enable them understand the aspirations and visions of individuals and develop new government approaches. In implementation of the initiative, a four-month training programme ''Learning and Design''will be conducted to build administrative and technical capacities of the first generation of government design CEOs who will introduce new concepts into government action.

The initiative focuses on the development of a government-based design system based on individual’s experience in partnership with the community to design best practices and make effective government decisions, guided by the UIAE development model. The design thinking will set solutions through research, information gathering and direct communication with the community to design government models, enhance integration and develop policies, programmes and government practices.

The UAE government will work to promote this culture within the work environment of government entities by building the capacities of government designers and training CEOs on government designing.

A government design CEO will be the agent of change in the government work through the adoption of an inspirational and innovative vision for the teamworks, exploration of opportunities for improvement and integration and building capacities of teamwork to be able to create designs that satisfy aspirations of the community.
