TRA launches training camp for UAE Hackathon winners

ABU DHABI, 28th June, 2020 (WAM) -- The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, TRA, announced that it has completed supporting and sponsoring the winning innovative ideas of the UAE Hackathon (data for happiness and wellbeing) in its third edition, by launching the support and enablement phase through a training camp. This initiative is a continuation of the UAE Hackathon success, and in line with the vision and directives of the UAE in supporting innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.

The camp aims to support the winning teams by providing the correct mechanisms and methods to transform their ideas into models and startups, using the design and creative thinking approach that mainly depends on deep problem analysis, finding opportunities, identifying the techniques and technologies necessary to invest in these opportunities, and learning and applying these technologies that focus on people, its creativity and innovations in designing appropriate solutions economically, socially and environmentally.

Commenting on this initiative, Salem Al Housani, Acting Deputy Director General for the e-Government Sector, said: "Today, we are continuing the success of the UAE Hackathon (data for happiness and wellbeing). What the UAE innovators have provided deserve all support and assistance. Reaching the creative idea is important, but what more important is to invest this idea and turn it into an existing project that serves our country's goals and future visions. We have learned from our wise leadership the true meaning of innovation. Innovation does not only lie in generating ideas but rather in transforming these ideas into a reality that brings good and happiness to all members of society. Today, through this intensive camp, we will provide our innovator with the best methods, solutions and keys that they can use to transform their ideas from their smart devices screens into reality. We will be with them every step of the way until they become productive entrepreneurs."

During the camp, TRA and its UAE Hackathon partners provided all the necessary support to the innovative and creative ideas to succeed and turn into real companies and projects, by closely following-up with the participating teams. It starts by studying and understanding the users and their needs, and transferring this information to the camp participants, which help them identifying problems that need innovative solutions and thus identify opportunities and finding solutions. The teams begin to implement and produce models, followed by returning to users once again to test the product and get to know customers’ opinion in this product or service. After ensuring that the product or service is suitable to the needs of customers and the market, the participating teams present their achievements in the camp.

After the camp comes the mentoring and guidance phase, which will last for two months (July and August) in the form of remote lectures and direct communication by a distinguished group of mentors, where these lectures will be presented through TRA Virtual Academy, and this stage will be concluded with a final meeting in which ideas and projects will be presented in front of a committee of investors and entrepreneurs, as well as business incubators, to give the investment opportunity to these ideas to become successful companies that contribute to the UAE development.

In addition, TRA announced the launch of two new initiatives within the UAE Hackathon Program: The Happiness Portfolio, which will provide an opportunity for all the Hackathon winning ideas to communicate directly with all the concerned entities and investors interested in supporting and sponsoring these ideas, as the portfolio helps them present their projects. The second initiative is the Hackathon community, which will contribute significantly and effectively in increasing communication and interaction between all the Hackathon participants, including innovators and creators, members of the jury committees, trainers and mentors, as well as all participating and supporters of the Hackathon, through the Hackathon website and social media platforms.

In its third edition, the UAE Hackathon witnessed the participation of more than 3130 participants from 60 nationalities, forming 350 teams. They participated in seven hackathons held from February 2 to 27 throughout the Innovation Month in the seven emirates of the country, starting from Abu Dhabi and ending in Dubai. A number of 112 inspiring ideas were shortlisted for the closing ceremony on March 3, which was held virtually at the Ministry of Possibilities.
