FNC calls for highlighting UAE's counter-terrorism efforts globally

ABU DHABI, 14th March, 2017 (WAM) -- The Federal National Council (FNC) has called for formulating a national plan to highlight and promote the UAE's efforts to counter terrorism and extremism regionally and globally.

Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation, said, "The plan will sell, market and promote the mandate, strategy mission and objectives of two major Abu Dhabi-based counter-terrorism actors: Hedayah, the International Centre of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism (CVE), and Sawab Centre, a joint UAE-US initiative to combat Daesh's online propaganda and promote positive alternatives to extremism.

Al Hashemi stated that all stakeholders would be involved in the formulation of the plan.

The minister was responding to questions by FNC members about the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), an attempt to systematically rank the nations of the world according to terrorist activity. The index combines several factors associated with terrorist attacks to build an explicit picture of the impact of terrorism over a 10-year period, illustrating trends, and providing a data series for analysis by researchers and policymakers.

The members asked about the measures taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to promote the UAE's counter-terrorism efforts.

''We need to place the UAE in the position it deserves in counter-terrorism efforts,'' an MP said.

Replying to him, Al Hashemi said, ''A team is studying the global terrorism benchmarks and indices, and the House will be updated on the findings.''
