ABU DHABI, 21st May, 2017 (WAM) -- Ten young Emirati youths have participated in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, Intel ISEF, the largest international pre-college science competition in the world, which took place in Los Angeles, USA from 14th to 19th May.

The Think Science Ambassadors showcased their science and technology projects which covered a wide range of innovations including the use of Moringa seed to purify water, removal of heavy metals from waste water using Zeolite, Graphene-based solar panels to increase the efficiency of the solar panel, Green Belt, an innovative technology ensuring that vehicles will only run if passengers have safety secured seatbelt, chemical fog dispersion technique to eliminate or disperse fog for the safety of traffic, and technology to turn newspaper into a base for planting that is used in soil to help planting in desert areas.

Commenting on the participation of Think Science Ambassadors in the Intel ISEF, Maytha Al Habsi, Deputy CEO of Emirates Foundation, said, "It’s at the heart of Emirates Foundation’s mission to inspire the UAE youth to take vested interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and to pursue their passion for innovation. Through our Think Science initiative, we have made long strides towards this goal, with the help of our long-standing partners from the private and public sectors. Since its inception, Think Science engaged thousands of UAE youth in a multitude of programmes all geared toward embedding a culture of innovation and passion for science and technology."

Expressing their gratitude and appreciation, the Think Science Ambassadors shared a collective message, saying, "The Think Science programme has opened doors and supported us to expand our horizons and knowledge beyond any expectations. Today, we here representing our country at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair where we were exposed to diversified cultures and innovations from peers from around the World. We are very grateful to the Emirates Foundation for giving us this unique and once-in-a-life-time opportunity and for teaching us that hard work and commitment will always pay off."

Intel ISEF provides an annual forum for more than 1,800 high school students from over 75 countries, regions, and territories, to showcase their independent research and compete for more than $4 million in awards. Today, millions of students worldwide compete each year in local and school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these events go on to participate in regional and state fairs from which the best win the opportunity to attend Intel ISEF.

At Intel ISEF, awards are based on students’ abilities to tackle challenging scientific questions, use authentic research practices, and create solutions for the problems of tomorrow, where doctoral level scientists review and judge their work.
