Joint Committee for Traffic Safety launches ‘Vision Zero Strategy Development Project'

ABU DHABI, 24th May, 2021 (WAM) -- The Joint Committee for Traffic Safety in Abu Dhabi Emirate, chaired by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) that includes Abu Dhabi Police, the Department of Health and the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) as members, announced the launch of the 'Vision Zero Strategy Development Project' that aims to eliminate traffic fatalities in Abu Dhabi and achieve a zero rate of deaths.

DMT indicated that the launch of this project is a reflection of the wise leadership’s vision and directions to meet the needs of the individual and society, contributing to enhancing the quality of life and making Abu Dhabi a safer society.

Abu Dhabi Emirate has succeeded during the past years in decreasing the rates of traffic accidents, injuries and death rates resulted from them. DMT is striving to achieve better results by implementing the vision zero strategy in cooperation with its stakeholders, to achieve better results.

The idea of the vision zero strategy revolves around building a safe transport system in which human errors do not result in deaths. The system also takes into account the limited physical capabilities of the human body in enduring collisions.

The project’s scope includes the development of an action plan covering all strategic pillars from establishing safe roads, implementing safe speeds, developing safety specifications for vehicles, enhancing road users' responsibility towards others and developing a response system for traffic accidents.

This can be achieved through the use of necessary tools and the launch of several initiatives and projects from many disciplines, including education, drivers training programmes, vehicles and drivers licencing procedures, laws and rules in addition to traffic control, specifications, creativity and innovation, coordination, and scientific research.

To enhance the awareness of the drivers and pedestrians to traffic safety requirements, the Joint Committee for Traffic Safety will launch awareness campaigns that encourage members of the community to respond constructively to the objectives of the strategy.

The launch of this strategy is within the efforts of the Joint Committee for Traffic Safety to enhance road safety by adopting the best innovative solutions and global practices in the field.

These efforts are part of the committee’s responsibilities in supervising the implementation of the traffic safety strategy, approving plans and annual executive programmes, proposing traffic safety legislation and standards, and the required tools to decrease the number of fatal accidents.
