Sharjah, May16, 2002 (WAM) -- The United Arab Emirates and the Arab world media today mourn the death of one of their great sons, Taryam Omran Taryam, Board Chairman of the Al Khaleej Press and Publishing House, who died here today at the age of 60. Taryam, who is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Al Khaleej Newspaper, was born here in Sharjah, in 1942 and had his education in Sharjah and Kuwait before going for his first degree certificate in Egypt. During his lifetime, which is full of selfless service to his country and people, Taryam was one of the leading figures who actively participated in discussions that led to the establishment of the UAE federation on December2, 1971, after which he was appointed as the first UAE ambassador to Egypt and the first UAE Permanent Ambassador to the Arab League. In 1977, he was elected as the Speaker of the Federal national Council, FNC, and won another term in 1979. He was one of the pioneer journalists in the UAE. In 1970 he teamed up with his brother, Dr. Abdullah Omran, to set up the Al Khaleej Press and Publishing Company, and produced the first issue of the +Al Shuruoq+ weekly magazine in June 1970 and the first issue of the +Al Khaleej+ newspaper on October19, 1970, to be the first UAE daily newspaper. The late Taryam retired to journalism in 1980 and has since been in control of the Al Khaleej Press and Publishing House with utmost success. The publishing house now issues two daily newspapers, two weekly and two monthly magazines. He was very active during his youthful days, participating fully in various public activities. He was an active founding member of various students unions during his school days at the university in Cairo. He was also an active member in a number of conferences and Arab national functions. He was Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sultan bin Al Owais Cultural Establishment, the Deputy Chairman of the Emirates Committee for Arab Integration, a board member of the Arab Unity Studies Centre and a member of the Gulf Development Forum, in addition to being a member of many Arab and international organisations. Taryam would always be remembered for his dedication to Arab cause and just issues throughout the world. He was very independent and has left behind a valuable heritage of news articles on various national and Arab issues. WAM/SA
