Zayed committed to helping Palestinians : says Hamdan

Abu Dhabi, May 17, 2002 (WAM) -- President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan is committed to helping the Palestinian people to support their steadfastness against Israeli aggressions and allow them to restore their rights, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said yesterday. Writing in a new book on the Jenin massacre, Sheikh Hamdan referred to Sheikh Zayed's decision to finance the rebuilding of 800 Palestinian houses destroyed by Israeli invasion forces in the Palestinian camp of Jenin last month. "The president is strongly committed to supporting the Palestinian people by extending urgent aid to enable them to face the Israeli aggressors and the disasters caused by their aggressions," he wrote in the book entitled "Jenin: a massacre against humanity." The Gulf News quoted Sheikh Hamdan as saying '' the Red Crescent Society and other organisations in the UAE would continue providing assistance to the Palestinians so they can resist the occupation and pursue their struggle to regain their rights. In the book, published by the Zayed Centre for Coordination and Follow up, Sheikh Hamdan denounced Israel's invasion and its savage acts against the Palestinians. He called on all international relief groups to help the Palestinians against the Israeli onslaught described by the book as an ethnic cleansing campaign. The book also contained remarks by Palestinian foreign minister, Farouk Kaddoumi, who paid tributes to Sheikh Zayed for his steady support of Palestinians. "All the Palestinians acknowledge His Highness's stand and will remember it throughout history," Kaddoumi noted. He warned Arab states that Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon is carrying out long-standing Zionist plans to "set up greater Israel stretching from the Nile to Euphrates". WAM/TF
