Ibtikari programme winners present innovative startups

ABU DHABI, 25th March, 2019 (WAM) -- The four winners of the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development and startAD’s Ibtikari "My Innovation" programme, which aims to inspire Emiratis to come up with innovative ideas across various fields, recently presented their projects during Ibtikari Demo Day held in conjunction with Angel Rising Investor Education Symposium at New York University Abu Dhabi.

The chosen projects are ‘DirectSchool,’ an interactive smart application that connects school administrators and bus supervisors of multiple schools with the parents of their students; ‘Homz,’ a unique platform for home remodeling and design allowing owners to participate in the renovation process from start to finish; ‘Malena,’ an application enabling users to find and book appointments with the best aesthetic and cosmetic surgeons in the country; and ‘Meet The Locals,’ a majlis (meeting place) for expats and locals to connect, interact, and learn about each other’s cultures.

Mouza Al Nasri, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Khalifa Fund, said, "Khalifa Fund is immensely proud of the Ibtikari winners. Congratulations to them. Apart from presenting their innovative projects, the four also had a chance to meet and engage with successful entrepreneurs and experts during Angel Rising that enabled them to learn more about how to succeed in their fields of interest."

"They exemplify the values espoused by the programme and embody our mission to create a new generation of local entrepreneurs and build a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in the UAE in collaboration with startAD. By supporting and promoting local startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), we are in effect helping fulfill the goal of diversifying the domestic economy," Al Nasri added.

"We will continue to hold our Ibtikari programme to raise the global competitiveness of local SMEs and support entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation among Emirati youth. We are delighted to partner with startAD in this mission. We look forward to bringing our partnership to the next level for the benefit of all UAE startups and SMEs," Al Nasri concluded.

The Ibtikari programme is one of Khalifa Fund’s core initiatives supported by startAD, an accelerator and entrepreneurship hub anchored at NYU Abu Dhabi and powered by Tamkeen. It aspires to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the UAE and enable the development of technology startups in emerging and significant local industries such as energy, aviation, logistics, fintech, and smart transportation. Khalifa Fund will further evaluate the four winning proposals submitted for the fourth edition of Ibtikari to assess if they meet the organization’s criteria for potential financial support.

Experts, key partners, Angel investors, mentors, industry and community leaders, and entrepreneurs, among others attended the Ibtikari Demo Day and the Angel Rising symposium, which featured learning sessions on Angel investing.
